Maybe you’ve been thinking about studying a martial art for a while, and maybe you’re not entirely sure this is the thing for you. So what should you expect from your first martial arts classes?
1. Martial arts is for everyone, big or small.
Despite what many people think, not everyone who takes martial arts classes is large, intimidating beings who simply want to learn how to fight. In fact, the diversity of the students is rather extensive. Whether you’re over six feet tall or you’re shorter than the average fifth grader, self-defense is accessible to you.
2. You need to do your research before going. There are a lot of martial arts schools with a variety of classes to choose from. So what’s one of the best things to do to prepare before taking a class? Homework! It’s important for people to research where they are going and what type of martial art they are doing. Selecting the right school and program is crucial for starting your martial arts studies off on the right foot, so do your research.
3. You will work really hard and burn a lot of calories. When you take your first martial arts classes, the body is working in ways it hasn’t had to in the past by boosting your strength, cardio and dexterity. Your mind will be engaged with all the techniques you’re learning and you won’t even notice how hard you’re actually pushing your body.
4. It’s important to go in with an open mind. In order to gain the full experience of your martial arts classes, you should leave all of your presumptions behind. Open up, take the blinders off, relax and enjoy the class.
5. You will get a kick-ass workout while learning how to kick ass. It should go without saying that martial arts classes will give you a serious advantage should you need it. There is a chance you’ll get into a physical altercation at least once in your life, so it’s only smart that you know how defend yourself – martial arts is a fantastic self-defense practice.
6. You will occasionally get a bump or a bruise. While the martial arts classes are very safe, accidents do happen. This is a contact sport, so don’t be surprised if you get a bump or bruise once or twice. The whole point of martial arts is to avoid the things that give you bumps and bruises – or worse.
7. You’ll get more out of it than you think. Having a tough time handling stress? Do you have a hard time controlling your breath during a tough workout? These are just a few of the issues you can expect to tackle in a martial arts class. Your ability to handle stress, pressure and pain and to make a clear, conscious and positive decision will be far ahead after learning martial arts.
8. There’s no slacking off. To fully experience martial arts, attending a class every couple weeks won’t suffice. Studying the art takes time, and practice is crucial if you want to see real results. You’re missing out if you only pop in once every few months.
9. You’ve got to dress the part. Just like in most sports, the right equipment is essential for protecting yourself and others. Martial arts is no different, but the amount of equipment needed differs depending on the class you are taking. A mouthpiece and a groin protector are both key across any martial arts class, and schools often sell these themselves.
10. You’ll become a part of a community. Without a doubt, the most important aspect of martial arts classes is the sense of community that develops within the gym. The relationship between students and the instructors is key.
